PURPOSE

The purpose of Friends of the Loutit District Library is to maintain an association of persons interested in libraries; to focus public attention on the library; to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to the library; to support and cooperate with the library staff in developing library services and facilities for the community; to lend legislative support where needed; and to support the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights.

The Friends strengthen the library’s resources and services which cannot be funded through the tax-supported budget. Friends promote a sense of community identity through the activities of the Loutit District  Library.

Friends of the Loutit District Library have been involved in the following activities:
bulletPurchase of equipment for the library: two computers for the children’s room, scanner, printer, copy machine, laminator, stereo/phonograph, Reading Edge reader for the blind, badge maker, & much more!
bulletPurchase of books (all types), books on tape, subscriptions, videos, CD ROMs, & computer programs.
bulletPurchase of furniture for the library. (Book and magazine racks, furniture & toy chest for the children’s room, etc.)
bulletSupport of Adult Winter & Summer Reading Clubs, Children’s & Young Adult Summer Reading Clubs, and additional special programs by purchasing snacks, prizes & decorations.

You can become involved with the Friends of the Loutit Library! You will receive notices of all upcoming meetings and events being sponsored by the Friends.

 

MEMBERSHIP

The Friends meet on the first Wednesday of the month during the school year on the lower level of the Loutit District Library; guests are always welcome.

CHEAPSTACKS USED BOOK STORE

Run by the Friends of the Loutit Library, Cheapstacks Used Bookstore is the largest used bookstore in Michigan run by a Friends group.

 

Cheapstacks Open Hours

Monday      7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Thursday     3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Saturday     11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Located at the south end of the lower level of the library building, the store has over 1000 feet of shelves filled with fiction and non-fiction, hardcover and paperback books, as well as magazines, records, video and audio cassettes.

Approximately 20,000 used books!

 

Book Prices are

Hardcover      50 cents

First Editions - $2 to $5

Paperback 25 cents

Men's Adventure Paperback 10 cents

 

This is what you'll see when you enter the Cheapstacks Used Book Store. 

The shelf racks on the left contain 1500 linear feet of shelf space. Since a shelf holds about 30 hardcover books, there is room for 45,000 books.  In addition, there are 2 tables of paper back books, 18 bins of LP records, plus some audio and video tapes.
